Question 1

How much do motorized shades cost in Frederick, MD?

Accepted Answer

A standard interior motorized shade runs $450 to $900 per window installed. Large windows, sliding glass doors, blackout shades with side channels and anything hardwired run $900 to $1,500. Outdoor and patio shades are $1,500 to $3,500 per shade because of the weather-rated fabric and heavier hardware. Width drives the price more than anything else, and ten windows costs considerably less per window than two. The measure and the quote are free.

Question 2

Do motorized shades have to be hardwired?

Accepted Answer

No. Rechargeable battery motors are the normal choice for finished rooms, and they fit without opening a wall. A charge lasts months to a year depending on how often the shade moves. Hardwiring is better where the wall is already open, where the shade is somewhere awkward to reach with a charging cable, or on outdoor shades that move constantly. We do the electrical work ourselves, so running power to a window happens on the same visit rather than waiting on another trade.

Question 3

Which motorized shade brands do you install?

Accepted Answer

We fit Somfy, Lutron and Rollease Acmeda motors, which between them cover most of the motorized shade market. Somfy is the usual choice for both interior and outdoor shades and works with almost any smart home platform. Lutron makes sense when you already have Lutron lighting control, or are planning it, because the shades and the lights then run from the same keypads and the same app. We tell you which suits your windows and your budget rather than pushing one line at everybody.

Question 4

Can you fit motorized shades on skylights and sliding glass doors?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and those are two of the most common reasons people call us. Skylights need a shade on side guides so it does not sag, and a hardwired motor is usually sensible because nobody wants to get a ladder out to recharge one. Sliding glass doors take a single wide panel on a reinforced tube rather than a row of narrow shades. Both are measured on site.

Question 5

Do you install outdoor and patio shades?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Motorized exterior shades for decks, screened porches and patios, in weather-rated fabric on a reinforced tube, with side guides where the opening is exposed to wind. We fit a wind sensor as standard so the shade retracts itself before a storm damages it. Outdoor shades are a different product from interior blinds and are quoted separately.

Question 6

Will motorized shades work with Alexa, Google or my existing smart home system?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Shades can run on their own through Alexa, Google Assistant or a phone app, or be tied into a wider lighting and shading control system so the lights and the shades move together on one set of scenes. Schedules can follow clock time or sun position. If you already have a smart home platform, we build the shades into it rather than adding a second app.
