What Actually Makes a Smart Lock Last
Smart locks are sold as a fifteen-minute DIY job. They usually are. The ones that fail six months later fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the lock.
The door has to close square
A door that needs a hip to shut it needs a motor with a hip, and there is no such thing. We check bolt travel and adjust the door, hinges or strike before the lock goes on. This is the single biggest reason smart locks fail.
The strike plate has to be mortised and screwed to the stud
Short screws into the trim look fine and hold nothing. Three-inch screws into the framing behind the jamb are what stops a door being kicked in, smart lock or otherwise.
The bolt needs its full throw
Most deadbolts throw an inch. If the hole in the frame is shallow or misaligned the bolt only goes part way, the motor works against friction every time, and battery life collapses.
WiFi has to actually reach the door
Front doors are usually the furthest point from the router, and a lock that cannot hold a connection is a keypad with extra steps. If coverage is marginal we say so, and fixing the network is often the real job.
Somebody has to set it up properly

What These Jobs Usually Look Like
The lock somebody fitted themselves that keeps jamming
Almost always the strike plate. The bolt is catching the edge of the hole rather than dropping into it, the motor is straining every cycle, and the batteries last a month. Ten minutes with a chisel and longer screws usually fixes what a new lock would not.
Four doors, four different brands
Front door done in 2022, back door in 2024, garage side door by a previous owner. Four apps, four sets of codes, and nobody knows which is which. Standardising on one platform is usually cheaper than people expect because the doors themselves are already prepared.

What happens if the batteries die or the WiFi goes down?
Every lock we fit keeps a physical key override, so you are never locked out. Locks warn you well before the batteries go, and most will still run for weeks after the first warning. With no internet the keypad and the key both still work — you lose remote unlocking from your phone, nothing else.
Can I still use a normal key?
Yes. We only fit locks with a mechanical override, and we can key them alike so one key opens every door in the house. A lot of customers never use it, but it is the difference between a flat battery being annoying and being a call-out.
Will a smart lock fit my door?
Most exterior doors already have a standard deadbolt bore that takes a modern smart lock. Metal, fiberglass and unusually thick doors need a bit more work but are all doable. Doors that have dropped or bind need adjusting first, and that is part of the job rather than a surprise on the invoice.
Are smart locks actually secure?
The lock is rarely the weak point. A one-inch deadbolt into a strike plate screwed to the stud is stronger than most front doors, and that is true whether the lock has a keypad or not. Where smart locks genuinely improve on a key is that codes can be changed and revoked in seconds, and you get a record of every entry — neither of which a key gives you.
Can I give a cleaner or contractor their own code?
Yes, and it is one of the best reasons to fit one. Codes can be limited to certain days or hours, or set to expire on a date. You can see when they were used, and you can revoke one without changing anything for anybody else.
Can the locks work with my cameras and alarm?
Yes. Unlocking can disarm the alarm and switch on the hall light. Arming at night can lock every door in the house. A lock event can be tagged against the camera covering that door, so you can see who came in rather than just that somebody did. This is part of full home automation, and it is far easier to plan now than to retrofit.
