Loxone Miniserver and System Design
The Miniserver is the whole system — it holds the logic, and it runs whether the internet is up or not. We size it to the house, lay out every load and every input room by room before ordering anything, and build the cabinet on DIN rail so it can be worked on later by somebody who was not there when it went in.
Loxone Tree and Loxone Air
Tree is the wired version — one cable daisy-chained between devices and back to the cabinet, and the right answer whenever walls are open. Air is the wireless version, which retrofits into a finished house with no cable pulled. Most houses end up with both: Tree wherever we could reach, Air for the rooms we could not.
Lighting, Shading, Climate and Audio on One System
Lighting scenes, motorized shades tracking the sun, heating and cooling by room rather than by floor, and multiroom audio — all on the same controller and the same logic. One Away press closes the shades, drops the heating, kills the lights and arms the house.
Energy, EV Charging and Access
The parts most platforms leave out. Energy monitoring circuit by circuit so you can see what is actually costing money, EV charging scheduled to run overnight or when solar is producing, and door access and intercom on the same system. Because we are electricians, the circuits and the charger installation are ours rather than another trade's.

Everything that decides what happens — the schedules, the scenes, the sensor rules — lives on the Miniserver in your own cabinet, not on a server somewhere else. Lose your internet connection and the lights, heating, shades and door still behave exactly as programd. You lose remote access from your phone until it comes back, and nothing else.
No Monthly Fees or Licenses
You buy the hardware and the programming once. There is no subscription, no per-room licensing and no annual charge for the system to keep working, which over ten years is a genuine difference against platforms that bill yearly. Adding a room later is hardware and a few hours of programming, not a new tier.
Automation, Not Another App
Most smart homes just move the light switch to your phone, which is more work than the switch was. Loxone is designed so the house handles the routine itself — lights that follow occupancy and daylight, shades that track the sun, heating that knows the room is empty. The app is there for exceptions, not for everyday use.
It Wants Cable, So Timing Matters
This is the honest constraint. Loxone is at its best wired, with a Tree cable running between devices and back to a central cabinet, and that is cheap while walls are open and expensive once they are closed. If you are building or gutting a house, this is the decision to make early. If the house is already finished, Air does the job wirelessly at a higher hardware cost.

A new build where the owners had decided on Loxone before the slab went down, which is the ideal starting point. We laid out every load and input with them at the drawing stage, ran Tree cable to forty-odd devices while the studs were open, and built the cabinet in the mechanical room on DIN rail with everything labeled. Touch switches at every door, one Away button in the garage, and heating that works room by room rather than by floor.
A Finished House in Damascus, Nothing Opened
A 1990s house where the owners wanted automation and were not going to accept holes in the plaster. Loxone Air throughout — lighting control in the main rooms, shades on the west side, climate by zone, all wireless back to a Miniserver in a hall closet. Higher hardware cost than a wired system and zero disruption, which was the whole point. Two days on site.
A System Nobody Could Program in Clarksburg
A house bought with a Loxone system already in it, an installer who had long since moved on, and no Config file anywhere. Half the scenes did nothing and the owners had gone back to using the switches manually. We rebuilt the configuration from the hardware up, documented the cabinet properly, finished the two subsystems that had never been commissioned, and handed over the Config file. It does now what it was sold as doing five years ago.

Loxone Tree or Loxone Air - wired or wireless?
Tree is the wired version: a single cable daisy-chained between devices and back to the cabinet. It is more reliable, cheaper per device, and the obvious choice any time walls are open. Air is wireless and retrofits into a finished house with nothing opened up, at a higher hardware cost per device. Most houses we do end up with both – Tree wherever cable could be run, Air for the rooms it could not reach.
Does it still work if the internet goes down?
Yes, and this is the main reason people choose it. The logic runs on the Miniserver inside your house, so lights, heating, shades, scenes and door access all carry on exactly as programd with no connection at all. What you lose until the connection returns is remote access from outside the house and voice assistants. Nothing inside the house stops.
Are there monthly fees or subscriptions?
No. You pay for the hardware and the programming once, and the system keeps working. There is no subscription, no per-room licensing and no annual charge, which over the life of a system is a real difference against platforms that bill yearly. Adding a room later costs hardware and programming time rather than moving you onto a new tier.
Can you take over a Loxone system somebody else installed?
Yes, and we get asked fairly often, because there are not many Loxone partners in this area. We will document what is actually installed, rebuild the configuration where the original file has been lost, fix what stopped working, finish anything that was never commissioned, and hand you the Config file at the end.
